A major problem with information is simply that many people do not understand its value. Because it is often not tangible, it is too often not seen as an important resource, worthy of protection.

This outlook, and shades of it, has over the years been responsible for substantial losses to a wide range of organizations. Lack of awareness can therefore be costly. Expenditure on addressing this is therefore sound investment.

WHAT CAN I DO?
As mentioned elsewhere, security awareness should be part and parcel of the organization's culture. This is not easy to acheive, but through a step by step approach progress can steadily be made

The first step is usually to obtain the support of the organization's CEO and Executive Management. The top layer of the organization MUST undertand the importance of awareness, and MUST support the awareness intiative.

Thereafter, there are many potential avenues to use... induction courses, posters, messages via the PC... full utilization of the organization's internal communication systems.

Of course for information there must be a framework to operate rounds - a set of rules to communicate and apply. These are the information security policies. These are increasingly based upon standards.
